As of 17 January 2018, a cumulative total of four cases including three deaths has been reported from the communes of Boukoumbé Toucountouna. All four cases initially developed symptoms while residing in Nigeria and subsequently travelled to Benin. Contact tracing is ongoing in Benin and across the border in Togo.

As 8 January 2018, a case of Lassa fever has been confirmed in Benin, in an adult from Togo. He became ill on 25 December 2017 while in Nigeria. On return, he attended Boukombé health centre and was transferred to hospital and died on 9 January 2018. Contact tracing in ongoing.
