On 13 May 2017, 23 additional laboratory-confirmed human cases were reported in China. As of 23 May 2017, a total of 1,486 laboratory-confirmed human infections have been reported since early 2013. The number of human infections and the geographical distribution in the fifth epidemic wave (i.e. onset since 1 October 2016) is greater than in earlier waves. As of 24 April 2017,  29 new human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) were reported in the last week, Beijing (7 cases), Hunan (5 cases), Hebei (4 cases), Sichuan (3 cases), Shandong (2 cases), Zhejiang (2 cases), Anhui (1 case), Gansu (1 case), Guangxi (1 case), Jiangxi (1 case), Jilin (1 case) and Liaoning (1 case). Between October 2016 and 24 April 2017, 616 cases have been recorded in mainland China.

On 24 March 2017, 18 additional laboratory-confirmed human cases have been reported in mainland China. The cases were reported from Anhui (1), Fujian (1) Guangxi (5), Guizhou (1), Henan (1), Hubei (2), Hunan (4), Jiangxi (1), and Zhejiang (2). The number of human infections in this fifth epidemic wave (i.e. onset since 1 October 2016) is greater than the numbers of human cases reported in earlier waves.
