Course introduction

Our next course is scheduled to take place from 2nd September to 23rd September 2026

HTD and NaTHNaC have co-developed this virtual travel medicine course for ID trainees across the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales). The course is endorsed by the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) and fulfils all curriculum requirements for combined infection trainees across the UK. It can be taken at any time point during training and can be covered by your study leave allowance. This enables trainees to have their competencies signed off for their PYA.

The course uses a combination of interactive case-study discussions, interactive lectures, online learning modules and audio-recordings of travel medicine consultations. There is the opportunity for small group tutorials and one-to-one sessions with your tutor. An element of self-directed learning is also expected.

The course will take place on 4 consecutive Wednesdays, starting on the scheduled date mentioned above. Expected content can be seen below:

Consultant lectures/workshops covering:

  • Introduction to Travel Medicine and epidemiology of travel-related illness
  • Malaria prevention
  • Traveller vaccinations
  • Immunosuppressed traveller, and allergy and travel
  • Travel through the ages
  • Post-travel scenarios

Nurse-led workshops covering:

  • Planning vaccine schedules complex itineraries (HTD)
  • Discussion of advice line scenarios (NaTHNaC)

For those opting to do a project, this can be completed after the 4 weeks. The option of spending time in the travel clinic or NaTHNaC may be possible for those who are interested once they have completed the course.

The course runs twice a year in March and September.
