Avloclor (chloroquine tablets) discontinued and Malarivon (chloroquine syrup) out of stock
Updated information for health professionals on the supply of chloroquine for malaria chemoprophylaxis
- This updates the news item of 8 December 2025
Avloclor (chloroquine phosphate tablets) has been discontinued. Once current stocks are exhausted, no further supplies will be available.
Supplies of Malarivon (chloroquine phosphate oral syrup) are currently out of stock with an expected recovery date in late September 2026.
Advice for health professionals
Chloroquine malaria chemoprophylaxis is only considered for a small number of countries due to the relatively poor protection it gives in many geographical areas due to the presence of drug-resistant P. falciparum malaria.
If chloroquine is recommended, but unavailable, an alternative malaria chemoprophylaxis regimen can be considered (such as atovaquone plus proguanil combination preparation or doxycycline or mefloquine).
Health professionals with questions on suitable alternatives for individual travellers can check the UK Malaria Expert Advisory Group guidelines and contact the NaTHNaC advice line for health professionals or the Malaria Reference Laboratory if needed.
Health professionals who need further information regarding the supply of chloroquine are encouraged to contact the manufacturers directly:
- Avloclor tablets: Alliance Pharmaceuticals 01249 466 966
- Malarivon Syrup: Wallace Manufacturing Chemists Ltd 01235 538 700
-
Shortage of Malarivon expected until the end of September 2026.
