On 8 July 2025, a man previously reported as being critically ill with bat lyssavirus in New South Wales, died. This is the state's first confirmed case of Australian bat lyssavirus in a human being.

On 2 July 2025, New South Wales Health in Australia reported the state's first confirmed case of Australian bat lyssavirus in a human. The individual, aged in his 50s, was bitten by a bat several months prior and had received treatment following the bite (type of treatment not stated).
