Marburg virus disease in Ethiopia
On 14 November 2025, an outbreak of Marburg virus disease was reported in Jinka Town, South Ethiopia Regional State. A total of nine suspected cases and six deaths have been reported, including two fatal cases in health workers. This is the first Marburg virus disease outbreak reported in Ethiopia. Undiagnosed illness/suspected viral haemorrhagic fever in Ethiopia
As of 13 November 2025, eight suspected cases of viral haemorrhagic fever in South Ethiopia are being investigated by health authorities. Laboratory testing is awaited and the WHO have sent a team to the region to support. Please see UKHSA guidance on viral harmorrhagic fever for further details.
