On 26 April 2025, Uganda's Ministry of Health declared the end of an outbreak of Ebola disease (EBOD), caused by Sudan virus [1], following a 42-day period (two consecutive incubation periods) without recording any new cases.

Since the outbreak was declared on 30 January 2025, a total of 14 cases (12 confirmed and two probable cases) including four deaths (two confirmed and two probable) were reported.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners provided technical, operational and financial support to the government to contain the outbreak. Surveillance to rapidly identify and respond to any re-emergence is ongoing.

There are six species of orthoebolavirus, four of which are known to cause disease in humans [2]. Outbreaks of Ebola disease are a known risk for Uganda. This is the sixth Sudan virus outbreak reported in the country, the last occurring in 2022 [3], and the eighth outbreak of orthoebolavirus in Uganda overall. This latest outbreak reflects the ongoing risk of resurgence of disease in countries with a known wildlife reservoir.
