Botulism in United Kingdom
On 18 July 2025, the UK Health Security Agency issued a warning for the general public to be aware of signs and symptoms of botulism after a series of cases presented to NHS healthcare settings. Cases presented following adverse reactions after receiving cosmetic procedures involving botulinum toxin. Between 4 June and 14 July 2025, 38 cases have been reported in the North East, East of England and East Midlands region. Early investigations indicate that an unlicensed Botox-like product was used.
Mpox in Australia
On 19 July 2025, Queensland Government reported a travel-associated clade I mpox case in Queensland, Australia. This is the second confirmed clade I mpox case reported in Australia. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on mpox.

As of 16 July 2025, six circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) positive environmental samples have been reported from Morobe and National Capital. These samples were collected on 26 May 2025. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on polio.

Pneumonic plague in USA
As of 11 July 2025, a fatal case of pneumonic plague has been reported in an Arizona resident. The risk to the public of exposure to plague is considered to be low.
Bat lyssavirus in Australia
On 8 July 2025, a man previously reported as being critically ill with bat lyssavirus in New South Wales, died. This is the state's first confirmed case of Australian bat lyssavirus in a human being.
On 2 July 2025, New South Wales Health in Australia reported the state's first confirmed case of Australian bat lyssavirus in a human. The individual, aged in his 50s, was bitten by a bat several months prior and had received treatment following the bite (type of treatment not stated). Rabies in Thailand
As of 7 July 2025, a total of seven deaths from rabies have been reported: Chonburi, Sisaket, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Ratchasima (two cases), Tak, and Rayong during 2025. Some diseases may only be reported if they occur outside of the usual recognised risk area or season, or they have been reported in greater than usual numbers. Outbreaks of those diseases included in the UK childhood vaccination programme are not usually reported unless the outbreak is unusual or unexpected.
The information presented in the disease surveillance reports is collated from a variety of sources, including government bodies, international organisations and the media. The verification status of each report is clearly indicated. Verified reports are confirmed by official sources. Some unverified reports are included to ensure timely dissemination of information and where possible we will try to substantiate these reports, although confirmation may not always be possible. Unverified reports may be subject to change, misreporting and may later prove to be unsubstantiated. They should not therefore be regarded as official.
