Japanese encephalitis in Australia

On 14 March 2025, the New South Wales (NSW) Government in Australia reported a second fatal case of Japanese encephalitis (JE). Five cases have been reported in NSW in 2025. This is the second death from JE acquired in NSW in 2025, and the fourth since the virus was first detected in NSW in 2022. JE virus has been reported across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
