WPV1 in Germany
Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) has been detected in an environmental sample taken from wastewater in Hamburg on 6 October 2025. There have been no reports to date of any clinical or suspected human cases of poliomyelitis in Germany, with the last cases recorded over 30 years ago. West Nile virus in Germany
As of 22 October 2025, a locally acquired human case of West Nile virus (WNV) has been reported in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria. This is only the second case ever reported in Bavaria, the first being a vet in 2018. In the years 2019 to 2024 between four and 35 locally acquired cases of WNV are reported in Germany, the majority from eastern Germany. Extensively drug-resistant gonorrhoeae in Germany
As of 9 October 2025, a total of four locally acquired cases of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Neisseria gonorrhoea were reported in 2025. A strong molecular connection was confirmed between three of these cases. All infections occurred in heterosexual adults living in the same geographical region of Germany, with no recent history of travel abroad. These are the first known locally acquired XDR/MDR Neisseria gonorrhoea cases in Germany. Please see UKHSA guidance on gonorrhoea for further details.
CVDPV2 in Germany
In the week ending 6 August 2025, eight circulating vaccine-derived polio virus type 2 (cVDPV2)-positive environmental samples were reported in Germany; one from Baden, three from Bayern, one from Rheinland, and three from Sachsen.
