Malaria in Mayotte
Since January 2026, and as of 21 May 2026, 171 cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria have been reported in Mayotte. Of these, 97 cases were imported, 63 were suspected to be locally acquired, and 11 were of unknown origin. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on malaria.

Malaria in Cape Verde

Malaria in Greece
On 3 September 2025, the Greek authorities reported two probable locally transmitted cases of malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) in a rural area of Central Greece (Sterea Ellad). Symptom onset in both cases was late July/early August 2025. No further malaria cases have been detected during field investigations. Malaria in Mayotte
As of 31 July 2025, a total of 12 locally acquired Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases have been reported in Mayotte in 2025. These are the first locally acquired cases of malaria in Mayotte since July 2020. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on malaria.
Malaria in Zimbabwe
As of 8 June 2025, 111,998 malaria cases and 310 deaths have been reported across Zimbabwe. To compare, 29,031 cases and 49 deaths were reported during the equivalent 2024 period. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on malaria.
Malaria in Timor-Leste
On 24 July 2025, the World Health Organization certified Timor-Leste as malaria-free. Following the establishment of a dedicated nationwide malaria control programme in 2003, Timor-Leste has not reported any locally acquired cases from 2021 onwards. Malaria in Romania
As of 10 July 2025, a confirmed case of malaria has been reported in a Bucharest resident with no history of recent travel abroad. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on malaria.
Malaria in Suriname
On 30 June 2025, the World Health Organization certified Suriname as malaria-free. This is the first country in the Amazon Region to achieve this status. The last locally transmitted case of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Suriname was recorded in 2018, with the final Plasmodium vivax case in 2021. As of 2 June 2025, Queensland Health have reported two locally acquired malaria cases in Torres Strait residents during 2025. Investigations are ongoing. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on malaria.
Malaria in Belize
On the 15 April 2025, the Government of Belize reported locally transmitted malaria cases in Santa Elena Town and Cristo Rey Village in Cayo District (in the West close to the border with Guatemala). These are the first locally acquired cases in Belize in over six years. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on malaria.
Malaria in Trinidad and Tobago
As of 2 April 2025, the Ministry of Health is investigating a cluster of five malaria cases on the island of Trinidad, with the first case identified on 27 March 2025. It is unclear if this is locally acquired malaria and the type (species) of malaria has not yet been confirmed. Mosquito bite avoidance is recommended for all travellers to Trinidad and Tobago. Malaria in Botswana
On 25 March 2025, Botswana's Ministry of Health reported a significant increase in malaria cases reported in the past four weeks, related to recent heavy rains. This outbreak, which began in Okavango, has spread to several other districts. There have also been reports of cases in non-endemic areas, including Gaborone and Mahalapye.
