Mpox in Madagascar

Nipah virus in India
On 13 January 2026, two cases of Nipah virus were confirmed. Both cases are receiving hospital treatment. These cases are the first in West Bengal in 19 years. This is the 9th Nipah virus outbreak in India since the first outbreak in 2001. Between 2018 and 2025 outbreaks have been reported almost annually in Kerala. Mpox in Mexico
On 9 January 2026, the World Health Organization reported a clade Ib mpox case in Mexico. The case is an adult male with a travel history to Germany. This is the first clade Ib mpox case reported in Mexico. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on mpox.
Cholera in Mozambique
In 2025, a total of 5,787 confirmed cholera cases and 68 deaths have been reported from eight out of ten provinces in Mozambique. In the past four weeks, a 70 percent increase in cholera cases has been reported. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on cholera.

WPV1 in Pakistan
Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) continues to be reported in Pakistan with 30 human cases recorded during 2025. As of 7 January 2026, 36 WPV1-positive environmental samples were reported from specimens collected in November and December 2025 across the country.
