cVDPV1 in Algeria
As of 17 September 2025, one circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) case was reported this week, with onset of paralysis on 25 January 2025, from El Tarf. A genetically-linked cVDPV1 was also isolated from an environmental surveillance sample, collected on 17 March, from Oran. This is a new emergence. Nipah viral disease in Bangladesh
On 18 September 2025, the World Health Organization reported a total of four confirmed fatal Nipah virus cases in Bangladesh since January 2025. All cases were reported at different times in four separate districts across three different divisions: Barisal, Dhaka and Rajshahi. No epidemiological links have been identified between these cases. Oropouche virus disease in Panama
On 17 September 2025, the Panama Ministry of Health reported that 10 human cases of locally acquired Oropouche virus disease have been detected in different districts of Veraguas region, (Santiago, La Pena, Atalaya, Rodrigo Luque and the Table). Between 1 January and 26 July 2025, a total of 501 cases including one death were reported in Panama by the Pan American Health Organization. Chikungunya in France
As of 15 September 2025, a total of 479 locally acquired cases of chikungunya have been reported since the beginning of 2025. Cases have been reported from Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Corsica, Occitanie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Île de France, Grand Est, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Nouveille-Aquitaine. West Nile virus in France
As of 15 September 2025, 32 locally acquired cases of West Nile virus were reported in France. Cases have been identified from 10 departments in the following regions: Provence Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Occitanie, and for the first time Île-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. West Nile virus in Spain
On 16 September 2025, the Andalusia Ministry of Health in Spain reported the first locally acquired human case of West Nile virus (WNV) for the 2025 transmission season. As of 14 September 2025, a total of 54 Ebola virus disease cases (35 confirmed) and 27 deaths have now been reported from Bulape Health Zone, Kasai Province. A number of healthcare workers are amongst the deaths. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on Ebola disease.
Cholera in Angola
Between 1 January and 6 September 2025, a total of 28,102 cases of cholera have been reported from 18 of the 21 provinces. There has been a 46% average increase in the number of new cases reported in the last 4 weeks. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on cholera.
